One of Bob Marley & the Wailers' finest collections, AFRICAN HERBSMAN belongs alongside CATCH A FIRE and NATTY DREAD as an essential Marley recording. There are three reasons why AFRICAN HERBSMAN is significant. For starters, it is a treasure trove of some of Marley's best songs. Though these tunes were written and recorded in the early 1970s, Marley would revisit them--in concert and in re-recordings--throughout his career. The celebratory "Lively Up Yourself," the winsome and wise "Small Axe," the swaying "Don't Rock the Boat," and the escapist dream "Kaya," are only a few of the gleaming gems here.
More importantly, perhaps, AFRICAN HERBSMAN captures the Wailers at their peak as a band. With Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh's high, sweet harmonies prominent throughout, and the Barrett brothers' impeccable rhythms, the Wailers are an unstoppable unit (and provide a focus lost on some of Marley's solo albums). First issued by VeeJay in 1959, this Charly reissue of Jimmy Reed's "Found Love" features four bonus tracks, and some of Reed's best and most popular songs.
It opens with a true classic, the inexplicably titled "Baby What You Want Me To Do", one of the very few 50s and 60s blues singles which managed to crack the pop charts.Inexplicably titled? Well, yeah, Jimmy Reed actually never once utters the line "Baby what you want me to do", and on one available recording he and his wife can be heard bickering with the studio engineer about the title.He actually sings:
You got me runnin', got me hidin',Got me run, hide, hide, runAnyway you wanna let it rollYeah, yeah, yeahYou got me doin' what you want meBaby why you wanna let go?
Anyway, "Big Boss Man" is also here, with backing vocals from Mary Lee ("Mama") Reed, and so is the primitive but groovy "Hush Hush", which features the great Eddie Taylor on lead guitar.Jimmy Reed does a fine rendition of soul singer Clarence Carter's "I Ain't Got You", and manages to sound genuinely menacing on "I'm Gonna Ruin You", and other highlights include the lively "The Sun Is Shining" (not the Elmore James-song), the title track, and the slightly spiritual-flavoured "Going To The River".

Wayne "Frosty Freeze" Frost, a hip-hop pioneer whose acrobatic performance with the legendary Rock Steady Crew in the 1983 movie "Flashdance" helped set off a worldwide breakdancing craze, has died. He was 44.
Frost died Thursday at Mount Sinai Medical Center after a long illness, said Jorge "Fabel" Pabon, a senior vice president of the crew where Frost and other so-called b-boys (for beat or break boys) made their name performing complicated and daring dance routines.
"He was one of most charismatic b-boys that ever lived," said Benson Lee, director of the new documentary film "Planet B-Boy."
Breakdancing emerged from the Bronx and Harlem in the early 1970s, part of the hip-hop culture that also included graffiti, MCing or rapping, and disc jockeys scratching and mixing vinyl records on turntables.
During extended pauses, or breaks, in the music, b-boys would mimic James Brown's showmanship and footwork and Bruce Lee's martial arts, adding their own signature moves.
Frost was known for his energetic style, intricate choreography and fearless moves including back flips and head spins. One was even dubbed the "Suicide."
Frost got his start in 1978 with the Bronx-based Rock City Crew. In 1981, he became part of the Rock Steady Crew, joining such acclaimed breakdancers as Ken Swift and Lil Crazy Legs.
Frost toured the world with the Rock Steady Crew and other hip-hop artists, including Fab 5 Freddy, Futura 2000 and Kool Lady Blue.
Frost's appearance with Rock Steady Crew in "Flashdance" spread the breakdance phenomenon globally, said Joseph Schloss, a visiting scholar in the music department at New York University. "He was one of the first B-boys that most people ever saw," Schloss said.
Graffiti artist and close friend Zulu King Slone, who knew Frost for 15 years, said he was "like a walking hip-hop culture encyclopedia."
As a member of the Rock Steady Crew, Frost also appeared in several movies on hip-hop culture, including "Wild Style," "Beat Street" and "Style Wars." He also appeared on the cover of the Village Voice in 1981.

A great later production by Norman Whitfield -- and one that almost returns to the simpler harmony soul of 60s Motown! Masterpiece have a style that's much more fragile and sweet than other groups on the Whitfield label -- which was mostly dedicated to fuller and dancefloor soul. The harmonies here are really classic -- almost acapella inspired at times, although recorded with plenty of fuller backings arranged by Norman -- and the vocals are very upfront in the mix, and really given plenty of room to move around. Titles include "The Girl's Alright With Me", "High On Love", "We Like To Get Down", "Take A Look Around", "Thank You For The Love", "Love Is What You Make It", and a version of "You + Me = Love".

Listen to the one-two punch of "Shout Bamalama" and "Get Off in It" for a sense of Hinton's expressive range. The biggest moment ever for saxophonist John Handy -- an album that crossed over big, thanks to a tremendously funky title cut! Handy first rose to fame back in the 60s -- playing modernist jazz with Charlies Mingus, and opening up on his own in a stretch of great albums that evolved from hardbop, to modal jazz, to some even freer world jazz experiments in the 70s. Here, though, he's back in very soulful territory -- working in a combo that has keyboards and guitar, and plenty of grooves that are somewhere in a space between early 70s CTI/Kudu and similar dates on Cadet or Prestige Records! The style's a great balance of modes -- and although electric, the album's never too smooth -- thanks to relatively small instrumentation on most numbers, and an approach that still lets most of the energy come from the interaction of the core group members. Players include Hotep Cecil Barnard on keyboards, Mike Hoffman on guitar, Chuck Rainey on bass, and James Gadson on drums -- and Handy plays both alto and tenor, and even sings a bit on a few cuts. Titles include the JBs-styled "Hard Work", plus "Afro Wiggle", "Didn't I Tell You", "Love For Brother Jack", "You Don't Know", and "Young Enough To Dream".

Heavy funk from the Indy scene of the late 60s -- the lost album by one of the funkiest combos in the Midwest! Ebony Rhythm Band have an incredible sound that seems to take the heavy bottom of New Orleans Funk and merge it with the trippier elements of Detroit psychedelic soul -- no surprise, considering they hailed from Indianapolis, a point about halfway between the two cities! The tracks on the set have a really great tripped-out groove -- using lots of guitar and organ over heavy rhythms, in a style that's a bit like the Meters at times -- but a lot freer flowing. The album features 2 tracks that formed the basis of one of the group's singles -- plus a lot more that were never issued at the time, including a few by other incarnations of the combo! Spice 1 (born Robert L. Green, Jr. in Corsicana, Texas), is a West Coast rapper raised in Hayward, California, best known for his acclaimed self-titled album Spice 1. He has consistently been releasing solo and group albums since. Spice 1 was ranked number 56 in The Source magazine's Top 115 Hip-Hop Artists from 1988 - 2003.

Jive Records (1991-1999)

He was first discovered by rapper Too Short. His first album, Let It Be Known, was not well-known or widely released, and included seven old-school style tracks. His second album, widely considered as his debut, was a very vivid and fatalistic Gangsta rap album, and his angry, edgy, and pessimistic rapping style and tone only added to the despair emanating from the disc. He followed it with an even more bitter and nihilistic release, 187 He Wrote in 1993, complete with simulated gunfire.
Spice 1 managed to release six albums under Jive records along with one greatest hits album under Jive as well. It was reported by Jive that he has an album called "Full Metal Jacket", which was suppose to release under Jive. However, Spice 1 stated in many interviews that this information was false. It was something Jive wanted to push him into releasing, but he never agreed to do so. Therefore, the album was never released and it is uncertain whether or not songs for this album were used for future albums or if any songs were even recorded for this project.
While Spice 1 was signed to Jive, three of his albums reached Gold status. According to the RIAA, these albums were Spice 1, 187 He Wrote and AmeriKKKa's Nightmare. He continued to have success on later albums as well, though he never managed receive further certificates for selling over 500,000. Despite this he never changed his image, continuing to retain a gangster image throughout his career on Jive Records. The biggest song in his career was "Trigga_Gots_No_Heart" from the Menace II Society (AVILINK_BTJUNKIE) Soundtrack. However, at the same time he released "Trigga Gots No Heart", which also served as a first single for his album, fellow rap artist MC Eiht also had a hit single from the Soundtrack which took the number one spot called "Straight Up Menace". Leaving Spice 1 with the second best single off the soundtrack. After 8 years, Spice 1 released his last album with the label, The Immortalized. Though it received good reviews, it was not well promoted and didn't sell as expected. According to Spice 1, he left Jive Records because they wanted him to clean up his image.
Life after Jive (2000 - 2007)
Spice's creative output has ballooned since his release from Jive. He has released more than 10 group and solo albums since.He now resides in Lynnwood and rooms with Domino while recording for Kop & Flip Records.
Spice 1 was shot on the morning of December 3, 2007 while sitting in his parents' driveway. The shooting is believed to be motivated by robbery, rather than any sort of rivalry. Spice 1 is currently recovering at Eden Medical Center and is expected to make a full recovery. Spice 1 talked about the shooting 6 days after it occurred from his hospital bed.
